Learn Why Helichrysum is a Fantastic Essential Oil

Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum), also known as Immortelle and Everlasting, is one of my favorite oils to use in musculoskeletal blends.

Therapeutic Properties

It has therapeutic properties that work especially well together. The analgesic will help relieve the actual pain. Anti-inflammatory properties help reduce swelling, thus reducing pain as well. The antispasmodic properties reduce, you guessed it, spasms, again helping reduce pain.

Furthermore, Helechrysum is also Antihaematomal, which means that it has the capability to alleviate bruising after soft tissue injuries. This injury can be as minor as taking a light fall and developing a bruise.

Clinical Applications

I use Helichrysum in blends where has been damage to the musculoskeletal system: muscles, tendons, and even joint pain. Depending upon your injury or issue, I will make a blend specifically for you. See example below.

Soft tissue damage, pain, inflammation, and bruising is another application where Helichrysum can be very beneficial. In this particular case the bruising may be helped due to its vasilodilatory effects.

According to Salvatore Battaglia “The Complete Guide to aromatherapy” (see Everlasting) it is well known to purify the blood when using a lymphatic drainage massage. Also, Battaglia notes that its anti-inflammatory properties help in sinus infections, bronchitis, and coughs.

Helichrysum is also one of the very few essential oils that I would use neat, or undiluted. However, for a very short period of time. In this particular case, I would put a very small amount of the oil on a scratch or scrape. The oil’s wound healing action will help the scratch or scrape heal initially. Afterwards you can use Lavender (Lavendula augustifolia) for continued skin healing. However, please do not put it on an open puncture wound. In that case let it heal a bit, then put the oil on the area affected.

My Recipe for Minor Muscle Pain at 2% dilution

1 oz. plain natural lotion

5 drops Ginger (Zingiber officinale) for its warming and circulatory tendencies

9 drops Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) for its muscle/tendon and soft tissue damage

7 drops Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) for its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties

Happy Blending!!
