How Essential Oil Blends Can Help Reduce the Symptoms of Seasonal Allergies

Do you hate the two times of year when we are hit with seasonal allergies? Many are tired of the clogged nose and sneezing. Are you looking for something more natural to use? If so, then a blend of essential oils can be a great support in helping reduce the symptoms of seasonal allergies.

Why Essential Oils Can Help

Essential oils are made up of chemical components that have a variety of therapeutic properties. In modern medicine, many of these components are isolated and synthesized, becoming part of the modern drug.

In aromatherapy, we study these components with their therapeutic properties to make blends. Why do we make a blend instead of using one particular oil? Since we do not isolate particular chemical components, but rather use the whole oil, we look to a variety of oils and how they can work together and create a synergy amongst themselves. It is our job to study the percentages of these components in each batch of oil, as this can vary from batch to batch.

Choosing the Oils

After we have studied the percentages of these components and their therapeutic properties, we then look to see how they can work together.

For this particular blend we are looking for certain therapeutic properties to help alleviate the symptoms of seasonal allergies. In particular we look for antihistaminic, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, and antispasmodic properties.

Three Essential Oils Fit the Bill

  • German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)

  • Sweet Marjoram (Origanum majorana)

  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca anternifolia).

In addition to the therapeutic properties of these oils, there are also emotional and energetic qualities of two of these oils that may be beneficial. German Chamomile is known to calm feelings and frustration; Sweet Marjoram comforts and warms, calms obsessive thinking, and soothes the heart. For this reason, this blend may be beneficial for sleep during allergy

Another Oil

Lavender (Lavandula augustifolia) – This oil has anti-inflammatory, antiallergenic, and antispasmodic properties. It can also be a Central Nervous System (CNS) sedative, so it makes an ideal sleep aid. I have chosen to leave this oil out of the above-mentioned blend since it is widely used and because some people really do not like the aroma of Lavender.

Modes of Application

Inhaler

For day use an aroma inhaler is a good way to have your blend handy and not bother other around you. Just take a couple of deep breaths in each nostril as needed. (For us ladies, there is a refillable aroma inhaler that looks like lipstick on the outside. I comes in a few colors)

Diffuser

Add 3-4 drops of the blend to your diffuser at nighttime. If you like, you may add a drop or so of Lavender as well.

Chest Rub

A chest rub can also be beneficial during the night. I would typically make a blend using an oil-based carrier such as Jojoba Oil (actually a wax) together with beeswax. The reason for an oil-based rub instead of a lotion or cream is that it stays on your chest for a longer period of time, allowing the essential oils to slowly enter your body during the night. Think of it as a time release capsule.

Safety Considerations

While all of these oils are considered safe, German Chamomile can possibly potentiate certain medications (think of it as making the medications stronger). For this reason, I have not given the exact formula for the blend.
